Rolex Regattas

Luxury villas in pole position to watch September’s Rolex Regattas

Swan regatta RiS

The Costa Smeralda is the place to be in September for the pinnacle of the region’s magnificent summer regatta season. Courageous crews in magnificent yachts take to the clear Mediterranean waters to compete for glory in two international races: the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2024, now in its 34th edition, held from the 8th to 14th September this year, followed by the Rolex Swan Cup, first held in 1980, from the 15th to 21st September.

Both events are held in Porto Cervo at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, one of Europe’s most illustrious and elegant marinas. It was founded in 1967 by H.H. Aga Khan and soon became a byword for international sailing excellence with a membership equally as elegant as the assembled yachts. The club has held annual and biennial world-class events since the 1970s and in 1981 launched the first Italian challenge for The America’s Cup. Today, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is twinned with prestigious clubs including Yacht Club di Monaco, The New York Yacht Club and Royal Yacht Squadron UK.

For spectators, the excitement of watching the on-water action, a true adrenaline-filled experience as around 100 elite yachts manoeuvre at high speed, is matched by the spectacular setting. The yachts must navigate ‘Bomb Alley’, the nickname for the rocky passage between Porto Cervo and La Maddalena, a wonderfully natural and protected archipelago of around 60 islands and islets that provides its own dramatic backdrop.
